Hombres de Maiz (Men of Maize, 1949) is usually mentioned to be Asturias? masterpiece. Written in six parts, the novel explores the difference of traditional Indian culture with that of the modern society. Asturias had always been passionate and educated about the mysterious world of native communities. The plot revolves around an Indian community whose land is in danger to be cultivated for profit using procedures that will devastate their land. Through the novel, Asturias reflected how European imperialism is used to dictate, manipulate, and transform Latin American civilizations and that of the world. Because of Asturias? unique approach of telling his stories in the form of a myth, his novel was disregarded by the reviewers and public for quite a long time after its release in 1949.
