The Gene Krupa Story: Commonplace rendition of awesome jazz drummer’s life, his ups and downs, and his battle with pill dependency Cast includes Don Weis, Sal Mineo, Susan Kohner, James Darren, Susan Oliver, Yvonne Craig, Lawrence Dobkin, Crimson Nichols, and Buddy Lester. (101 minutes, 1959)
Hoosiers: Hackman gets a last chance job coaching a very small Indiana high school basketball team in the 1950s, and faces the duel tests of bringing the team to the state final and personal redemption. This story is loosly based on an actual team from a small town in Indiana that played for the state title. Cast includes Gene Hackman, Barbara Hershey, Dennis Hopper, Sheb Wooley, Fern Parsons, Brad Boyle, Steve Hollar, Brad Long, and David Neidorf. (114 minutes, 1986)
Straight Out of Brooklyn: The story of a black family?s going nowhere existence in the ghettos of Brooklyn, N.Y., and the oldest son?s plan to rob a local drug dealer to turn tings around for the family. Cast includes George T. Odom, Ann D. Sanders, Lawrence Gilliard, Jr., Barbara Sanon, Reana E. Drummond, and Mark Malone. (91 minutes, 1991)
Soapdish: Farcical comedy in reference to a soap opera monarch who’s trailing her clutch–on the show, and her life. Field and Kline are a treat to watch playing larger than life characters, however Whoopi is trashed, Downey is miscast, and the script (by Robert Harling and Andrew Bergman) imagines “anxious” equals “funny.” Cast includes Sally Field, Kevin Kline, Robert Downey, Jr., Cathy Moriarty, Whoopi Goldberg, Elisabeth Shue, Carrie Fisher, Garry Marshall, Teri Hatcher, Paul Johansson, Costas Mandylor, Stephen Nichols, Kathy Najimy, and Ben Stein. Say One for Me: Bing plays a Broadway pastor who gets mixed up with a chorus gal (Debbie) and a Television charitable cause show. Horribly contrived; no memorable music.
