Unsung Angel

English translations of masterpieces by Latin American writers seem to overflow in book shops recently. Various works have landed the best sellers list but what is so surprising is that Miguel Angel Asturias’ name still seems to be unheard of. I could not help but question how come a Nobel Prize award recipient appears to be anonymous.

Considering the fact that he had garnered a variety of recognitions, he deserves to have an entire shelf for his works. How could anyone let such treasure put to waste. Being an inspiration to others should never cease no matter how the tides of time have changed. The exact scenarios may not exist but surely an intelligent reader would find that they actually parallel some circumstances we encounter and undergo in our everyday lives.

The writer is aptly named for he possesses the wisdom of an angel. One who thinks beyond what is seen by the eyes but rather what is felt by the heart. No one has the right to bury such insight and the courage it required to put it into writing. The circumstances surrounding Asturias at that time were demoralizing yet he feared no one. He divulged the social injustice due to the oppressive actions of those in power at that time. Opening the eyes of his countrymen was such an enormous contribution. I believe guiding someone to look at one’s self from a different vantage point is priceless. His gift to others was a renewed sense of self that fueled one’s being.

Nothing is more precious in this world than helping someone realize his true worth and value. To let the people at large know that each individual is worth a fight and bloodshed, that we are all created as equals. No one is created greater or lesser than the other.  The awareness of this philosophy is contained in those books make them worthy of reproduction. It could totally qualify as a family heirloom in order for generations after generations to acquire such discernment. It would be unfair to our posterity to be bereft of the significant learning. However, it seems that these treasures are nowhere to be found.
