As a poet, novelist, and diplomat, Miguel Asturias obtained several honors and awards all throughout his career. However, his receiving of the 1967 Nobel Prize for Literature caused some controversy as a critic notes that Asturias was still quite unknown outside Latin America and that there were more worthy candidates within Latin America. I believe Asturias deserves to be a recipient of the most prominent award in literature given that his vibrant literary contribution brought attention to the significance of indigenous cultures and traditions of Indian people in Latin America. Another more controversial award was the Soviet Union?s 1966 Lenin Peace Prize which came after he finished the Banana Trilogy.
